There’s no doubt that poker is a complex game that requires skill. It’s easy to feel lost in a sea of experienced players, each with their quirks and tactics, and there are so many variants and nuances that even seasoned players can find themselves scratching their heads from time to time. But don’t let that intimidate you!

This beginner’s guide will teach you all the basics of poker, from the game’s rules to some handy tips for playing your cards right.

Poker rules you need to know

Poker is played with a standard 52-card deck without jokers. The suits of the cards (clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades) don’t matter in poker—only the values of the cards are relevant.

Aces can be high or low, so the lowest hand you can get is ace-2-3-4-5 (known as “the wheel” or “a straight flush”), and the highest hand you can get is 10-J-Q-K-A (a “royal flush”).

The objective of poker is to finish the game with the best hand, or if that’s not possible, to bluff your way to victory by making other players think you have a better hand than you do.

GGPoker, the world’s largest poker room, has a Poker School where you may find more advice.

Ranking what poker hand wins from highest to lowest

There are many poker variants, but the most popular ones (such as Texas Hold’em) use a similar hand ranking system. Here’s a quick rundown of the different hands you can get in poker, from highest to lowest:

Royal flush: A-K-Q-J-10, all of the same suit. The best possible poker hand.

Straight flush: Any five cards in sequence and of the same suit. For example, Q-J-10-9-8.

Four-of-a-kind: Four cards of the same rank. For example, 4 fours (“quads”).

Full house: Three cards of the same rank, plus two cards of another rank (a “set” and a “pair”). For example, Q-Q-Q-2-2.

Flush: Any five cards of the same suit. For example, A♥ K♥ Q♥ J♥ 10♥.

Straight: Any five cards in sequence. For example, 5-6-7-8-9.

Three-of-a-kind: Three cards of the same rank. For example, three Queens (“trips”).

Two pair: Two sets of two cards of the same rank. For example, J♦ J♠ 10♣ 10♦ 4♣.

One pair: Two cards of the same rank. For example, A♠ A♦ 9♣ 7♥ 3♦.

High card: When you don’t have any of the above hands, your highest card is your “hand”. For example, if you have J♥ 10♣ 7♠ 6♦ 4♠, your hand is a “Jack-high”.

Learning how to read poker hands is an essential part of the game. If you want to know what kind of hand you should be aiming for, look at this helpful guide to poker hand rankings.

Strategies for dealing the best hand when playing poker

You can do a few things to increase your chances of being dealt a strong hand in poker.

Firstly, try to play at tables where the average hand strength is high. This means more players will likely fold when the pot gets raised, giving you a better chance of winning.

Secondly, try to play against inexperienced players or have poor poker etiquette. These players are likelier to make mistakes, such as calling your bets even when they have a weak hand.

Finally, position yourself, so you’re the last player to act on each hand. This gives you the advantage of seeing how everyone else is betting before making your own decision.

Some tips for playing poker

Now that you know the basics of how to play poker, here are some handy tips to help you up your game:

Pay attention to the cards on the table and what’s still in the deck. This will give you a better idea of what hands are possible and help you make more informed decisions.

Bluffing can be a helpful tool, but don’t overdo it. If you’re constantly bluffing, other players will catch on, and you’ll find it hard to win hands.

Poker is as much about reading people as it is about playing your cards right. Pay attention to the tells other players are giving off and use that information to your advantage.

Don’t be afraid to fold if you think your hand is too weak to win. There’s no shame in folding and conserving your chips for another hand.

How to play poker online

If you want to try your hand at poker without going to a casino or poker room, you can always play online. Many sites offer online poker, and some even have special beginner’s tables where you can learn the ropes without risking too much money.

When playing online poker, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

  1. Make sure you’re using a reputable site that offers fair games.
  2. Be aware of the risks involved in playing online poker. There have been cases of people losing money due to fraud on poker sites, so it’s essential to be cautious.
  3. Remember that online poker is still a game of chance, so don’t get too discouraged if you don’t win every hand.

Poker is a complex and fascinating game that takes time and practice to master. This guide provides the basics that will get you started playing like a pro. You’ll be able to master the basics and start enjoying this classic card game.
